Lifelong Newhall Resident Gladys Laney, 102
2012 Fourth of July Parade

Lifelong Newhall resident Glayds Laney leads the way for the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center, winner of the 2012 Sweepstakes trophy.

Just a few days shy of her 102nd birthday, Gladys embodies the theme of the 2012 parade, "Santa Clarita Volunteers." For decades, Gladys volunteered five days a week at the Senior Center, just across the street from her home. She retired from her volunteer duties in 2010 when she turned 100.

Gladys was born July 16, 1910, to Bert and Armantha Thibeadaux in their home at the southwest corner of Market Street and Newhall Avenue. The home was eventually razed; the property was later developed as senior apartments.

No doubt, Gladys got the volunteering bug from her mother, who was one of Newhall's leading citizens in the 1910s-20s-30s. Armantha could be counted on to head a community clean-up crew or keep the men of Newhall's first Chamber of Commerce in line by serving as its secretary.

Gladys' "birth home" is gone, but she still lives on Market Street as of 2012.
