Saugus Rodeo Opens Today.

Two Hundred of West's Top Hands to Compete.

With a "ki-yi-yippee-ay" the Old West will come to life today when 200 cowboys and cowgirls, including some of the world's best bronco busters and lariat throwers, go into action at the opening of the Saugus rodeo at Hill's ranch.

Starting with a grand entry at 2 p.m., led by the El Rodeo club and the mounted police of Santa Monica and Long Beach, the program will include bronco riding, bull riding, steer riding, steer wrestling, team roping and calf roping.

Finals in the championship contests will be held tomorrow afternoon. Special Southern Pacific trains will carry spectators directly to the arena.

Runaway Horse Plunges Through Rodeo Grandstand.

Los Angeles Times | Sunday, April 24, 1938.

Breaking from the chutes while being saddled, a runaway horse created a near panic at the Saugus Rodeo at Hill's ranch yesterday and hundreds of spectators fled as the animal plunged through the reserved section of the grandstand.

After kicking down benches in his pathway, the animal escaped from the stands and ran into the foothills. He was captured later and ridden by Hazel Burns, a cowgirl from Meridian, Wyo. None of the spectators was injured.

Injured in Mishap

The only casualty during the meet was Bud Clark of Long Beach, who suffered lacerations and bruises when a Brahma bull stumbled leaving the chutes and fell on him. Clark was rescued by rodeo performers.

The meet was the twelfth annual rodeo to be held at the ranch and more than 10,000 spectators gathered to watch the performance, sponsored by the Rodeo Association of America, which supervises more than 200 shows during the year.

Featured Entries

Included in the entries were the El Rodeo club and the mounted police of Long Beach and Santa Monica. Special Southern Pacific trains carried visitors directly to the new arena — the old buildings having collapsed during the March floods.

The show featured bronco-busting, roping, bareback riding, calf roping and steer wrestling. A second and final performance will be given today.

Steer Cracks Cowboy's Ribs.

Animal Tramples Rodeo Performer.

Los Angeles Times | Monday, April 25, 1938.

Trampled by the steer he attempted to ride, Pat Woods, Newhall cowboy, suffered cracked ribs yesterday as he competed in the second-day events at the thirteenth [sic] annual Saugus Rodeo. More than 10,000 persons witnessed the exciting final event despite threatening weather.

Winners in the competition were Smokey Snyder, bareback bronc ridig; Bill Eaton, calf roping; Nick Knight, saddled bronc riding; Howard McCrorey, steer wrestling; and The Canada Kid, steer riding. Roping and riding exhibitions also were included in the program.
