Scott Newhall, great-grandson of town founder Henry Mayo Newhall, and Ruth Waldo, an art major
at UC Berkeley, married Nov. 20, 1933 in Reno. They would have four children: Skip, born April 15, 1938;
twins Tony and Jon, born March 18, 1941; and daughter Penny, who died in a car crash in 1955.
The couple lived in the San Francisco Bay Area until 1968, when they moved into the Piru Mansion.
Ruth and Scott Newhall, veterans of the San Francisco Chronicle, purchased their namesake newspaper, The Newhall Signal, in 1963.
For the next 25 years they recorded — and influenced — the goings-on in the Santa Clarita Valley as the area grew from a sleepy L.A. backwater into a self-sustaining family community.
