Schoolhouse Under Construction
Rancho Camulos

Catalog Nos. RA3001-RA3056

Series of 56 small, 2¼x2¼-inch prints shows the process of building the schoolhouse at Rancho Camulos in 1930 from start to finish.

According to Shirley Rübel Lorenz (2002 and 2008 interviews), her father, August Rübel, who purchased the 2,000-acre ranch from the Del Valle family in 1924, had the school built for his five children (three girls and two boys), although Shirley suggests only three or four of them were of school age at the same time. The the two chlidren of August Rübel's bookkeeper also attended, she said. It was customary for the sprawling ranches of the Santa Clara River Valley to have their own schools because of the distances between them, she said.

Shirley fondly remembered the regular teacher, Veronica "Von" Casey, who hailed from Denver and later became an administrator of Denver schools. Once a week, Mrs. Esserick would come to teach art, and Madam Andrea gave weekly French lessons. "We've been known to put on little French skitsy-type plays here" on the school's raised stage, Shirley said.

After her father was killed in the war in 1943, Shirley's uncle Harry Forbes (her mother's sister's husband) came up from Sespe to run the ranch and lived with Shirley's aunt in the schoolhouse.
