John W. Valenzuela
Tribal Chairman, San Fernando Band of Mission Indians


John W. Valenzuela, chairman of the San Fernando Band of Mission Indians, walked on peacefully Thursday, November 16, 2017, with his family by his side. He was 79.

A resident of Hesperia, Calif., he was born in Oxnard, Calif., to John and Lupe Valenzuela on May 30, 1938.

Retired, he was a labor union member for more than 50 years. He was involved with Statham Little League, from manager to president, for many years. John enjoyed traveling and camping with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Rose Valenzuela, of 58 years of marriage; sons John Ralph Valenzuela, David Christopher and wife, Brenda Valenzuela; daughter Melinda Elise Morales; four grandsons, David M. and wife Sara Valenzuela, Daniel, Justin and Paul Morales; three granddaughters: Saleena, Sabrina and Estelana Valenzuela; a sister, Margaret Gabriel; and three brothers: Jess, Alfred and Leo Valenzuela.

Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, December 1, 2017, with a celebration of his life at 7 p.m. at Garcia Mortuary, 629 South A Street, Oxnard, CA 93030. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2017, at Santa Clara Cemetery, 2370 North H Street, Oxnard, Calif. 93030.
