About "The Ride Back."

Anthony Quinn returned to Melody Ranch for the second time in less than a year to star in "The Ride Back" from United Artists (1957).

Quinn was quite familiar with Gene Autry's Placerita Canyon movie town after starring opposite fellow Mexican actor Katy Jurado in UA's dramatic 1956 Western, "Man From Del Rio." Now he would portray a fugitive gunslinger who fled to Mexico and needed a "ride back" to justice in the States.

Quinn was a busy actor: In between his two Placerita Canyon appearances he won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in Vincente Minnelli's "Lust for Life" with Kirk Douglas and popped off to Paris to play Quasimodo in "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" with Gina Lollobrigida. Who wouldn't?

William Conrad ("Cannon," "Jake and the Fatman") portrays the sheriff charged with extraditing Quinn's character who, unluckily for the sheriff, makes friends wherever he goes and has a particularly loyal girlfriend (Lita Milan).

The story was originally an episode of the "Gunsmoke" radio show in which Conrad voiced the part of Marshal Matt Dillon. Conrad co-produced the film version; legend has it he did so out of spite after being denied the role of Matt Dillion on TV. "The Ride Back" also features Victor Millan, Jorge Treviño, Ellen Hope Monroe, Joe Dominguez and Louis Towers. Co-producers with Conrad are Walter Blake and Robert Aldrich.

Director through most of the production was Allen H. Miner; second unit director Oscar Rudolph finished it up.

Filming was done at Melody Ranch, Janss Conejo Ranch, and on location in Mexico.
