Souvenir postcard: "The Veranda, Ramona's Home, Camulos, Calif." (Yucca not in bloom.) No. 770 from Pacific Novelty Co., San Francisco, publishers. Made in German. Divided back, 1 cent domestic, 2 cents foreign. Postally unused.

Pacific Novelty Co. was in business from 1908 to the 1960s, but this would be on the earlier side, about 1910; in any event, prior to the wartime interruptions that started in Germany around 1914-1915.

Those who seek to literalize the characters and settings in Helen Hunt Jackson's 1884 novel "Ramona" would say the upper porch shown here is where the story's Señor Felipe, ill of the fever, lay on the pallet of hide that Alessandro made for him, and that in the room at right, behind the shuttered window, Ramona had her little sanctuary where, when imprisoned and separated from Alessandro, she gave her soul to prayer.
