Ed Yanez
World Champion Team Roper

Newhall produced a number of rodeo world champions, and one of them was Ed Yanez.

Yanez was the professional rodeo world champion in team roping in 1949. Here, in 1953, he's the No. 2 point leader behind the popular actor and equestrian stuntman Ben Johnson of Studio City. Johnson would hold onto his lead to become the 1953 team roping world champion.

This 7½x9½-inch Metro Group photo was distributed for publication Sept. 17, 1953 — so it's not shot at Saugus, which held its annual rodeo May 2-3 that year. Ed's brother(?) Bob Yanez can be seen on a bucking broncho at Saugus in 1953 here.

The rather unflattering photo cutline reads:

Ed Yanez of Newhall, Calif., is skilled in all phases of rodeo work. Pickup man is tall and hefty.

... which is somewhat ironic, considering he won prizes for "best dressed" cowboy in 1953 rodeos.

One important part of his wardrobe is the 1949 championship buckle he's wearing in this 1953 photograph.

Note that Yanez isn't the only Newhall resident on the July 1, 1953, leader board. Newhall's Dan Poore is in second position in calf roping.
