California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) under construction in 1969. South side of McBean Parkway between Tournament Road on the east and the new Interstate 5 Freeway on the west. The Valencia art college broke ground May 3, 1969. It held classes during its first academic year (1970-1971) at a temporary facility in Burbank, offering degree programs in six disciplines: Art, Critical Studies, Design, Film, Music, and Theater & Dance. Some students were moved to the new Valencia campus during the spring 1971 semester — just in time for the Feb. 9 Sylmar earthquake to take its toll on the 500,000-square-foot main building. The permanent campus fully opened for the fall 1971 semester with an enrollment of more than 650 students.
