Before Circle J was a residential subdivision, it was a working guest ranch. (A guest ranch is a dude ranch, where you could go cowboy for a day or a week and work off your room and board. "Dude" means city dweller.) In the 1960s, it was known as Onondarka Riding School.

Although it's considered Saugus today, Circle J was interchangeably Newhall or Saugus when it was a ranch, perhaps because it was part of the 10,000 acres of Newhall that the Kentucky prohibitionist (now there's an oxymoron) Henry Clay Needham obtained from The Newhall Land and Farming Co. back in 1887 and subdivided. Also, the entire SCV was known as the Newhall-Saugus Area.

Anecdotally, then-Hart High student Bill Rice remembers Elvis Presley staying at the Circle J Ranch during the filming of "Love Me Tender" in 1956. (Rice shot candid photos of Sinatra et al. during the filming of "Suddenly" in 1954.)
