Roger Salkeld's 1990 Topps rookie card (first-round draft pick), No. 44 in series.

Born March 6, 1971, in Burbank, 18-year-old Roger William Salkeld was the Seattle Mariners' third pick in the first round of the 1989 amateur draft.

The back of his rookie card highlights his record at Saugus:

Roger enjoyed distinction of not allowing a triple or home run in his entire Saugus High School career. He set school records of 17 strikeouts in 7-inning game (twice) and 19 strikeouts in 9-inning game during the 1989 season. Roger's statistics included one no-hitter and 7 one-hitters. His grandfather, Bill Salkeld, was catcher with Pirates, Braves and White Sox, 1945-1950, appearing in 356 games.

Roger's professional baseball career was a bit longer, although his time in the majors would prove shorter. He was plagued with injuries as he worked through the Mariners farm system, finally making it to the Major League ball club for three games in 1993.

His first win came the following season, on April 28, 1994, when he gave up no runs and two hits in 6.2 innings. He got 13 starts in 1994 only to be sent back down in 1995 and traded to Cininatti.

He returned to the majors in 1996 for the Reds and posted the best of his three MLB seasons, starting 19 games, appearing in 29. Despite a winning 8-5 record, he had a 5.20 ERA.

Salkeld pitched his last MLB game at age 25 on Sept. 28, 1996. The following year found him again playing AAA ball, where he remained until his retirement in 2000.
