Fourth of July 1934

Newhall's eldest citizens got together annually on the Fourth of July in the 1930s for a photograph in the original Newhall Park — now the playground adjacent to Newhall School on Walnut Street. (Portions of the original park may also have been given over for housing.) This is the "Old Timers Reunion" of 1934. Fourth of July festivities kicked off with highly popular "patriotic speeches" and included a barbecue, greased pole and greased pig contests, and baseball games that lasted until sundown. In this photo, a game of chance appears to be going on in the background at left; see the big question mark.
