Father Power

F
ather Patrick Anthony Power, retired pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Newhall, died Monday. He was 73.
Power, who was ordained into the priesthood in 1955, was born March 6, 1930, in Waterford, Ireland. Shortly after taking his vows, Power came to California to begin his service.
Powerıs uncle, John J. Cantwell, was the first archbishop of Los Angeles.
He was named pastor of OLPH in 1977 and retired in 2000. According the parish officials, Power said mass every Sunday and was very involved in the church school. Monsignor Paul Montoya, current pastor at OLPH, said Power devoted 27 years to the parish.
"In his quiet and gentle way, Father Power was firm in his conviction that living the Catholic way of life and faith would bring real peace to individuals and society. His insights and wisdom will be greatly missed," Montoya said. "May he be at peace with his God."
Former associate Father Norm Supancheck said Power was an admirable man who was willing to leave his family in Ireland to help people.
"He loved Ireland very much and he gave his life in service," Supencheck said.

A vigil will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at OLPH. Cardinal Roger Mahony will officiate a funeral mass on Friday at 11:30 a.m. at OLPH, 23233 Lyons Avenue.
