PHYLLIS BERMAN NAMED DOCENT OF YEAR

A Newhall resident and employee of the L.A. County Sheriff's Department, Phyllis Berman was named Docent of the Year for 2002 at the SCV Historical Society's annual Volunteer Recognition Dinner in April. Phyllis graduated from the SCVHS Docent Training Program in 2000 and gives guided tours at Heritage Junction Historic Park in Newhall (open Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4) and helps out with Society functions. SCVHISTORY MYSTERY

In last Saturday's Signal we printed a previously unpublished photo of the Walton Young homestead in Pico Canyon (Mentryville) in 1905. Readers were asked to pinpoint the location (we didn't know it), and to provide information (we don't have much) about the Youngs' home in the canyon prior to the Big House (Young was superintendent after Alex Mentry). Readers are coming through with clues; the home in the photo was probably the same as the boarding house that was in use at least in 1906 and possibly earlier. You can see the photo here:
