VOLUNTEERS NEEDED ON SEPT. 14
Trained Historical Society docents will lead interpretive walking tours through historic downtown Newhall during the 5th Annual Old Town Newhall Street Fair, coming to San Fernando Road on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 10 to 6. Tours will embark from a booth at the fair, where literature and other Society wares will be offered. WATCH SANTA CLARITA HISTORY ON TV
Join host Leon Worden for "Legacy: Santa Clarita's Living History" on SCVTV Public Access Channel 20. The new half-hour show, peppered with historic photographs, features Santa Clarita's history makers - people whose families homesteaded in the valley, people with expertise in particular aspects of SCV history, and people who've carved out their own legacy. New episodes debut Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. and repeat Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. Available only to AT&T Broadband and Time Warner Cable subscribers in the Santa Clarita Valley. A CALL FOR 9-11 MATERIALS
As the one-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 tragedy approaches, the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society is putting out a call for materials that represent the various ways the Santa Clarita Valley was affected, and how the local community participated in recovery efforts. Materials might include photographs, documents or other physical items, but oral histories - your own personal stories of the day, and the aftermath - are something the Society would like to preserve as well. If you have something to contribute, please send e-mail to info@scvhistory.com.
DID YOU KNOW?
One of the most successful mining operations of the early 20th Century had nothing to do with gold, silver or copper. Borax was mined from 1908 until the early 1920s in Tick Canyon, just above today's Canyon Country. Over time the local Sterling Borax Works merged into the company that would become U.S. Borax - which is headquartered in the Santa Clarita Valley. View photos here:
