CITY, SOCIETY TO DISCUSS PRESERVATION ON MONDAY
In 1991 the newly formed City of Santa Clarita listed 35 historically important properties in its first General Plan. Ten years later, at the urging of Mayor Laurene Weste (a Society board member), the city is preparing to consider drafting an ordinance that would either mandate or encourage property owners to protect these historic buildings and sites. The first step is to assess the ways a historic preservation program could take shape. This Historic Preservation Report has now been completed, and City Planning Director Jeff Lambert will be on hand to discuss it with us at our SCVHS board meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 23. Regular Society members are always welcome to attend board meetings, which are held in the Saugus Train Station in Heritage Junction Historic Park (inside Hart Park) in downtown Newhall. NEWHALL LAND DONATES $10K FOR NEWHALL RANCH HOUSE
Our restoration efforts took a big step forward a few weeks ago when The Newhall Land and Farming Company donated $10,000 to be used for weatherproofing and other improvements to the Newhall Ranch House — one of our eight historic buildings at Heritage Junction. The 19th-century ranch house was occupied by relatives of town founder Henry Newhall and, during most of the 20th Century, by his successor company's ranch foremen and their families. Transferred to the Society in 1990, the house has undergone major restoration and it looks great from the outside. Now, with the generous donation from its former owners, the home will be brought closer to completion on the inside, too!

PARDEE HOUSE MUSEUM ON FRONT BURNER
The City of Santa Clarita is helping the Society achieve its top capital goal for 2001 — the transformation of the Pardee House into a permanent museum and visitors center at Heritage Junction. The city has approved a $10,000 Community Services grant to keep the work going, and the city's new Parks Director Rick Gould and his staff are working with us to reel in the rest of the required funds from the state. When complete, the Pardee House will serve both as a showcase for Santa Clarita Valley history, and as a welcoming place for visitors to Heritage Junction and Old Town Newhall.
