Mark Edward Divis
Mark Edward Divis was born December 9, 1961, to Charles and Shirley Divis in Wahoo, Neb. The number 9 is very important to the family. Mark's daughter Samantha was born on May 9, his son Tony was born on March 9, and finally, Mark died on February 9 ~ that is the reason April 9 was chosen for his Memorial. Mark grew up in Wahoo, was very athletic and participated in all the high school sports and even acted in school plays. He had the lead as Conrad Birdie in "Bye Bye Birdie" and he could still amuse his children and especially his wife when he would sing "One Last Kiss." He attended the University of Nebraska and played in the Marching Band, beginning a tradition for his son and daughter, who also played in Marching Bands. His daughter also became a Drum Major when his son played varsity football. During college Mark was a member of the National Guard. Afterwards he taught music in Nebraska before moving to California where he began a career as a deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. He started in the jail system as a deputy and went on to patrol at Firestone Station. Mark met and married his wife, Sharon, while working in the court system in Van Nuys, CA. He had an immediate family with step-daughters, Jody and Kelly McMullen. Mark's daughter Samantha was born in 1990 and his son Tony was born in 1992. He transferred to the Sheriff's Transportation Division to enable him to spend more time with his family. He stayed in transportation for a number of years, then promoted to senior deputy and transferred to the North County Correctional Facility. He also worked repairing computers at South until the facility closed down. Then he ran for election to be a director in the Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs; he became vice-president in 2010. He was thrilled to dress in a suit and tie every day and participate in negotiations. Mark was diagnosed with stage-4 colorectal cancer on January 3, 2013. He began chemotherapy but was forced to accept a disability retirement in January of 2015. He underwent 49 chemo treatments in total and was trying to get into a clinical trial when it was found the cancer had again spread, this time to his bones. Mark passed away on February 9, 2017.
