Hart High School, along with many neighboring schools, hosted the 18th annual Spring Special Olympics in May.

These Special Olympics bring together athletes that have intellectual disabilities, from all over Southern California. Teams from the Tri-Valley area, all the way to Riverside, have been practicing for months to show their family, friends and hardworking volunteers what they can do.

Even Santa Claus showed up for the sixth year in a row, exclaiming his love and support for these brave and happy individuals.

“They are fantastic,” Claus said. “The love that these athletes have is just amazing.”

With the motto, “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt,” the athletes have more fun than competition. For these spring games, the main events were Basketball and Track and Field.

No matter who won, the competitors just wanted to cheer on their friends and have people do the same for them.

“A lot of people should come and join in [because] it’s really fun to cheer people on,” an athlete said.
