College of the Canyons’ Food for Thought food pantry is open to students, to help those who are at risk of homelessness and hunger.
College Assistant Christopher Hopgood attended a club meeting last year, where he found out over 200 students on the College of the Canyons campus were declared homeless.
“That was alarming to me, and I realized if their were 200 declared it may be more,” Hopgood explained.
The Associated Student Government and campus clubs raised awareness last year through a campus wide food drive.
The food pantry is always accepting donations.
Items that can be donated include, but are not limited to:
-Non-Perishable Foods (Please include Vegan and Organic options!)
-Canned Dog and Cat Food
-Pull Top Canned Tuna & Chicken
-Pull Top canned Fruits, Vegetables, Soup,Pasta
-Peanut Butter, Jelly
-Individualized Instant Cereals, Oatmeal Cups, Cereal Boxes
-Individualized Nuts, Trail Mix, Granola Bars, Dried Fruit, Cereal Bars
-Individualized Crackers Packets
-Pull Top Apple Sauce, Fruit Cups, Mixed Fruit Cups
-Individualized Macaroni & Cheese Cups, Cup O Noodle Ramen
-Tampons, Pads, etc.
The food pantry is open for donations Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and Wednesdays from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m..
More resources are also available for students in need.
“There is a lot more people in the Santa Clarita Valley that are wiling to do what it takes to help the pantry, maybe they just don’t know about its yet,” said Hopgood.
