COC shines light on teen suicide rates

11,000 college students lose their lives each year due to suicide, which is the second leading cause of death among college students.

Last week COC held an event to talk about and raise awareness for this pressing issue.

Organizations like Action, NAMI and SRD Straightening Reins had booths set up at the Shine a Light event, with pamphlets and information about each organization as well as information about suicide and suicide prevention.

This is the fifth year this event has been held; the first year had foldable chairs set out in the honor grove to represent each student that no longer fills that seat.

Now they use paper lanterns to represent each of the 11,000 students.

If you or a loved one are experiencing thoughts of suicide we encourage you to reach out by calling the national suicide prevention lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK or to visit the Health and Wellness center in the Student Center on the Valencia campus.
