American novelist and short story writer, Aimee Bender, came to Mentry Hall on Wednesday May 18th. in honor of the Celebrating the Humanities program to read an excerpt of one of her works. Bender is the author of 5 novels all of which have all received heavy praise. Her book, The Girl in the Flammable Skirt, was a NY Times notable book and her book, The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake, was the winner of an Alex award as well as the SCIBA award for fiction. Her novel, An Invisible Sign Of My Own, was named a Los Angeles Times pick of the year. Bender attended the University of California San Diego before receiving her Master of Fine Arts from the creative writing MFA program at the University of California Irvine. Bender’s short stories have been featured in publications such as Granta, GQ, Harper’s, and Tin House, just to name a few. Aimee Bender resides in Los Angeles with her family and teaches creative writing at the University of Southern California.
