College of the Canyons women’s softball team has had an amazing season so far. After finishing second in the division last season, the Cougars came into this season with a chip on their shoulder. COC still clinched a playoff berth, but fell to Cerritos in the first round. Regardless, this season the team has looked more dominant than the last.
Ranked #7 nationally, they have gone 18-2 in divisional match ups and clinched the Western State Conference (WSC)- Blue Division with four games conference games left. They have a phenomenal .900 win percentage as a team.
The team’s success has come behind experienced team leader, Ashley Russo. The sophomore pitcher has started 18 conference games, taken the win in 15 and completed an outstanding 10. She has been a huge asset to the team this year, with 120 punch outs on the season she has a 3.07 ERA in 171 IP. She leads the conference in wins and strikeouts.
Along with Russo, Sophomore Kiana Holder has command on the field. She has an impressive .429 batting average, with 51 hits in 119 at bats. In addition to knocking in 39 runs and hitting five home runs, she is fantastic on the field with a .991 fielding percentage.
The Cougars have one divisional doubleheader matchup left before the playoffs begin this weekend.
