A man presumably ended his own life after barricading himself in a backyard shed, ending a nearly six hour stand off with police in Canyon Country Wednesday night.
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Corey Kieffer, barricaded himself in a homeowner’s shed around 8 p.m. on Babington Street, said Lt. Rob Hahnlein of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Station.
After deputies sent in a special team to the shed around 2 a.m., they found Kieffer dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
“The suspect had a warrant for his arrest and proceeded to barricade himself after running from deputies,” Hahnlein said.
The shed was in the backyard of a Saugus business owner’s Canyon Country home. The owner’s daughter was home alone at the time the man barricaded himself, according to Poonam Parashar, the homeowner.
Residents of Babington Street were evacuated by police, forcing them to wait outside their home until the area was deemed safe.
The standoff lasted for several hours, which drew the curiosity of surrounding neighbors who weren’t used to the police sounds in their quiet neighborhood.
“This is out of the norm to have a gunman in this neighborhood,” said resident Don Richards. “I’ve lived here 25 years and never experienced anything like this.
Homicide detectives have taken over the investigation due to the gunshot wound.
