It was another very successful regular season for the COC Womens Volleyball team, as the Cougars ran wild on their opposition winning their third straight Western State Conference championship. The Cougars are now set to play Ventura in the opening round of the Southern California regional championships.

With a record of 22-2 overall and a perfect 12-0 in conference play, the Cougars were able to position themselves for a strong playoff run, a streak a confident Head Coach Lisa Hooper reflected on.”

“I’m super proud of the ladies, they worked very hard to get to this point. They earned the #4 seed in regional playoffs and we are well positioned and have the tools to make a deep playoff run,” Hooper said.

What made the Cougars so successful? The answer was simple for Hooper, “Balance…A nice balance on offense.”

This philosophy clearly translated onto the court as the Cougars averaged nearly 14 kills per set to go along with an average of 17 points per set.

It is fair to say that Hooper is building a powerhouse at College of the Canyons. If winning three straight Conference Titles and going undefeated in Conference play was not enough, the Cougars have not lost a game in nearly two months.   In fact the team has only lost two sets in Conference play.

It can be a challenge for any coach to keep a team this dominant from getting complacent, so how does Hooper keep her players hungry?

“We have team goals as well as individual goals, we try to make sure that each player monitors their progress toward their individual goals,” Hooper explained.

This philosophy has worked well for the program as 5 players are expected to be offered scholarships.

The work is not over for the Cougars as they host the Pirates tonight at 6 p.m. and don’t forget that COC will also be hosting the 2015 CCCAA State Championships on December 5th and 6th.
