Detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department are investigating human remains found Monday morning near the 26400 block of Bouquet Canyon Road in the Santa Clara riverbed.
City workers tasked with cleaning debris from a homeless encampment in the river found what appeared to be human bones, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s officials.
“This deceased person has been dead for months, or even years, we just don’t know,” Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau Lt. Steve Jauch said.
In response to questions about the possibility of the remains belonging to Khristin Whitney Ghilardi, a local Santa Clarita woman who was recently reported missing Jauch said, “There is absolutely no reason to believe that this person died anytime recently.”
The sex, race and cause of death are not immediately known, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
An excavation of the area by the Los Angeles County Corner’s office was projected to last throughout the night, Jauch said.
“At this point we don’t even know if we a have crime. We don’t know if there’s a homicide, we don’t know if it’s a natural death, a suicide. It’s just too early to tell. We’ve got a long way to go and we’re just now getting started.”
