A memorial was held on Thursday Feb. 20 for a former COC alumni at the Hyatt Regency Valencia.

The memorial was for Dylan Zimmerman, 21, who died of injuries suffered in a car accident on Valentine’s Day. The crash happened between  Copper Hill and Copperstone Drive.

Friends and family members mourned Zimmerman at his memorial.

Rachael Gaut, a long-time friend of Zimmerman and a current COC student, paid her final respects at the memorial.

“When I first heard about it [Zimmerman’s passing], I was in shock,” Gaut said.

“We first met at Rio Norte [Middle School] and have been friends since. He was really into music and it’s something we bonded over. He enjoyed jamming out.”

Zimmerman took architecture classes at COC with architecture and interior design instructor Nina Briggs.

Zimmerman took Briggs’ architecture course for one semester.

“When I first heard about the accident, on Monday, I burst into tears,” Briggs said.

“He was soft-spoken, curious, earnest and a good communicator. It’s a great loss.”

Regina Gonzalez’s son was the driver of the vehicle who crashed into Zimmerman’s car and was thankful her son survived with only minor injuries but shared her sympathy for the Zimmerman family.

“I send my condolences to Dylan’s parents and family,” said Gonzalez at the crash site.

Zimmerman’s black Honda Civic collided, while exiting Copperstone Drive, with a white Ford Fusion traveling eastbound on Copper Hill.

Gonzalez’s granddaughter was in the car with her son sitting in the backseat.

“I could have lost both my son and granddaughter.”

Zimmerman was a 2011 graduate of Valencia High School. Zimmerman worked in many local Santa Clarita businesses like: JC Penny, Stonefire Grill and was most recently hired as a member of Best Buy’s Geek Squad.
