The College of the Canyons Men’s Soccer team fell in the season opener to the El Camino-Compton Center Tartars, 3-1.

The Cougars had several chances to take the lead early in the game but several missed opportunities cost them.

Two minutes in, Brandon Davey missed a goal, wide right.

Seven minutes later, Thomas Pugliese hit the crossbar.

El Camino-Compton got on the board first as Luis Mancias placed the ball in the upper right corner 26 minutes in.

The Cougars subsequently missed an opportunity when Renato Sanchez penalty shot was stopped by Tartars goaltender Manuel Leon.

Eighteen minutes later, the Cougars tied the game as Tony Barrin received a pass from Abraham Garcia and slipped it past the lower right corner.

The Cougars and Tartars remained tied well into the second hour until Gabino Cortez scored through the bottom-left corner of the goal, giving the Tartars the lead.

Less than two minutes later, David Vargas headed in a goal after a shot from Hector Vital hit the post.

Cougars head coach Coach Phil Marcellin gave words of encouragementnt to the team after the game.

“I’ve got to flush the fact we lost out and have to throw out the last ten minutes,” Marcellin said.

“[I] have to be encouraging and try to improve on their mistakes,” he said.

“For the mass majority of the game I think we were pleased with the performance of our team. We need to do a better job of taking our chances and create a lot of good chances,” he said.

“We got frustrated at the end because our chances went resulting in goals and we got our head down but I think we matured from this game.”

The Cougars face Chaffey College Friday at 4 P.M.
