The College of the Canyons Board of Trustees will appoint a new member to replace newly-elected assemblyman Scott Wilk during an open Monday session.
During the meeting, the board will interview 13 candidates to fill Seat no. 5 Wilk vacated in December 2012. Wilk was elected to California’s 38th Assembly District seat in November.
Candidates for the empty board seat will be interviewed by current-board members. Candidates will be interviewed during 10 to 12 minute interviews during the open session. The board will vote and appoint a new member after all candidates are interviewed.
[UPDATE] Former Newhall Land executive Steven Zimmer has been selected as the new COC board member.
Zimmer is a real estate attorney with the firm of Gilchrist & Rutter in Santa Monica.
Previously he was an employee of The Newhall Land and Farming Co., where he headed the Newhall Ranch project – the eventual 20,000-home “mini city” west of Interstate 5 in the Santa Clarita Valley.
Zimmer was responsible for getting the project’s specific plan approved by the county Board of Supervisors in 2003, and for securing the necessary state and federal permits.
