Single Mothers Outreach hosts the third annual Empowering HeARTS gala celebrating women, art, and community. The black tie event launches the holiday festivities with an exquisite exhibit visual artists together with 12 women nominated as “Iconic” pillars in their respective fields. College of the Canyons Chancellor, Dr. Dianne D. Van Hook, has been nominated as an icon in leadership and education. As a premiere Santa Clarita arts event, the gala gives the community an opportunity to view a one-of-a-kind exhibit, enjoy elegant culinary arts, hors d’oeuvres, wine and soft drinks, complete with live music and original master works representing “iconic” women who inspire…not only single parents, but those who embrace success.
“I wanted to be an architect,” shares Dr. Van Hook. “I needed to do something that was out of the box,” she insists.
Dr. Van Hook has made her mark for over 40 years as a leader in education. She is compared to other icons for her ability to lead by example.
“Oprah Winfrey is an icon. There are sports icons, music icons, business icons. These exemplars play an important role in serving as role models, as setting the bar to which many aspire. In 2012, Single Mothers Outreach will honor 12 women who set the standard, who serve as an example, who define,” states DaAnne Smith, Executive Director for Single Mothers Outreach.
Artists are paired with the honorees to bring their story of achievement to life through photography, painting, and other forms of visual arts. The works of art will be unveiled at the gala held at Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center on Saturday, November 3, 2012 from 5:00 pm to 7:30pm. One work of art will be selected as the ‘Iconic’ representation for this year’s Empowering HeARTS. Following the gala, the art will be displayed at the College of the Canyons Art Gallery.
The honorees for the third annual event, “Iconic”, include Patsy Ayala (Corporate Relations Director, Our Valleys Magazine), Dr. Diana Barnes (Perinatal Mood Disorders Specialist), Lois Bauccio (Zonta/Santa Clarita Child & Family Center/SCV Non-Profit Leadership Network), Julie Benson (Vice President of Public Relations, Princess Cruises), Crystl Bustos (two-time Olympic gold medalist, Softball), Judi Davidson (co-owner and co-founder of Davidson and Choy Publicity),
Alice Davis (original designing woman at Walt Disney Imagineering known as Disney’s “Lady of Animation), Lisa DeLong (author and grief facilitator for families affected by pediatric cancer), Cheri Fleming (President-Elect of Soroptimist International and co-owner, Valencia Acura), Emily Iland (author and international advocate for autism awareness), Kathleen Sturkey (executive director of the Los Angeles Residential Community Foundation, LARC Ranch), and Dr. Dianne Van Hook (CEO of the Santa Clarita Community College District, and president of College of the Canyons).
Celebrating women, art, and community highlights attributes of success from a variety of iconic women in a broad spectrum of careers. Empowering HeARTS seeks to empower women, especially single women, to achieve their dreams. The gala is open to all ages. Tickets are $65, available at the door and online at www.SingleMothersOutreach.org/hearts.
