The Cougars came out big against the Citrus College Fighting Owls on Wednesday night winning 3-1.

Throughout all 4 sets, the Cougars and the Fighting Owls were trading blows, but the Cougs were able to stay atop throughout.

In the first set, the Cougars held up the entire way without allowing the Fighting Owls to catch a breath which would allow the Cougars to take the first match 25-19.

The second set did not fair as well for the Cougars where at times they looked flat and could not mount a rally against the Owls. Although the Cougars tried to fight back throughout, the Owls were able to set up a rally of 7-0 that would eventually lead the Citrus to take the second set 25-16.

Coach Hooper got caught up in difficult match-ups in which Citrus’ Head Coach Shin Jung won the chess match.

“The matchups were exactly the opposite of what we wanted in the second game…but I think we did a good job adjusting,” said Coach Hooper.

The Cougars found their feet in the third set in which they would go on to win 25-18. The Lady Cougars had a strong lead from the get go starting off with a 16-8 lead and never looking back. The Owls tried to claw back to make it 19-15, but the Cougars were too strong and were able to diminish the Owl comeback. COC went on a 4-0 run to close the third set.

The camaraderie of the schools athletic program really helped the Lady Cougars as supporters from both the COC football and basketball squads started poured in and filled up the stands for the Cougars.

The Cougar athletes set up a huge momentum swing for the Cougars and Coach Hooper believes that the may have had something to do with the girls uptempo play. “…They were loud, AND they were on Citrus’ side, I think that made a big difference,” Coach Hooper explained with a smile.

With the crowd heavily involved, the Cougars were able to grab serious momentum and go up big, 11-4.

COC then carried that momentum and closed out the final set, 25-19 and grabbing their second conference win of the early season.

The Cougars next face Bakersfield in the Cougar Cage this Wednesday at 7pm.
