Quartz Hill, Calif. – The Canyon High School Cowboys played the Quartz Hill High Rebels at Quartz Hill Friday night looking to win their fourth straight game after beating Knight High School 56-27 last week.
The game quickly turned into a shootout that the Cowboys ended being on the losing side of, scoring 49 points and still short of a win against the Quartz Hill Rebels.
The game started out with Foothill League favorite Canyon scoring a rushing touchdown early in the game. The dual rushing attack of junior Dominic Pennucci and senior Daniel Castro continued to be a rushing threat throughout the game, rushing for a combined 119 yards on 17 carries.
However, the Rebels came back in the second quarter, scoring 20 unanswered points against the Cowboys. After responding with another touchdown, the Cowboys ended the half down by 21 thanks to the rushing attack by Quartz Hill Senior Osirius Burke, who ended up with a total of six touchdowns on the night, all of which were runs.
But Cade Apsey led the Cowboys on in the second half. The Junior quarterback threw with poise as Rebel defenders hurried around him, throwing 16 for 32 with 312 yards along with four touchdowns and two interceptions.
The game seemed to be within reach for the Cowboys late in the fourth quarter. With three minutes left to play, the Cowboys were at the goal line and threw the ball for the score. However, Senior defensive back and running back Devin Brooks of the Rebels intercepted the ball, which turned into an 80 yard touchdown run for the Rebels.
The Canyon High Cowboys (3-1) will have a bye next week and will face Steele Canyon High School in two weeks. The Quartz Hill Rebels (1-2) will play Littlerock High School next Friday.
