Cougars season ends in extra-innings thriller

The number 18 seed Cougars faced the 15 seed Santa Barbara Vaqueros in a play-in game to see who would face the number 2 seed Rio Hondo. The Cougar fought hard and long losing to the Vaqueros in the 16th inning 6-5.

The Cougars trotted out pitcher Corey Jones out to the mound with a 7 win no loss record to face Santa Barbara. In the second the cougars took the early lead when Adam Bouyer singled in James Bonds and Kevin Lenik. The Vaqueros tied it up in the bottom of the inning scoring two runs on only one hit a bunt. The cougars regained the lead when Chad Delaguerra scores on an error by the short stop off the bat of Connor Garelick. That lead lasted till the bottom of the fifth when Zach Zeiner hits a 2-run triple put the Vaqueros up 4-3 in bottom of the 5th. next hitter Mark Jebbia follows up with a triple of his own that push the Vaqueros lead to 5-3. this lead to the pulling of starter Cory Jones and John Salas came in as a reliever. The score would stay that way up until Jake Jelmini hit a two-run home run to tie the game at five. no one could score after that which lead to extra inning. Santa Barbara had the bases loaded with one out and the Vaqueros grounded into a double play to end the inning. the Cougars weren’t so lucky in the 16th with a runner on second Salas gave up the game ending hit to Mark Jebbia to score Zach Zehner. With the win Vaqueros advance. In his 11 innings in relief Salas only allowed the one run.

The cougars batters struggled against Santa Barbara pitching getting only eleven hits and striking out nineteen times. Cougars pitchers countered with eighteen strikeouts of their own eleven from Cory Jones who only pitch four and one-third innings. the cougars hit leader was Christian Ornelas with three hits in the game. Jake Jelmini and Adam Bouyer each had two RBIs. Santa Barbara was led by Mark Jebbia with four hits and two RBIs. Zack Zehner also two RBIs.

For the season Chad Delaguerra led the team in hits with 56 and runs with 34. Jake Jelmini and James Bonds were tied for the team lead for RBIs with 28, Jelmini also led the team in home runs with 6. Pitching was lead in wins by Cory Jones had a record of 7 wins and no losses and led the team with 89 strikeouts. John Salas led the team with three complete games.
