The College of the Canyons softball team will host Santa Barbara City College in the first round of the California Community College Athletic Association Softball Southern California Regional in a best-of-three series May 5-6.

The Cougars (37-2-1) received the No. 1 seed in the south bracket after claiming a state-best 37 wins while winning the Western State Conference, Blue Division Championship.

The Cougars started the season with a 17 game winning streak before tripping up again Bakersfield on March 13th. The Cougars bounced back winning 20 of their remaining 22 games.

Santa Barbara (23-15) claimed the No. 16 seed in the south bracket after finishing second in the Western State Conference, Gold Division behind Ventura College.

The 2012 playoff appearance will be the third time in the five-year career that head coach John Wissmath has taken the Cougars to the playoffs, first time as the No. 1 seed.

The first game of the best-of-three series will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 5. The second game will be at noon on Sunday, May 6 and game three at 2 p.m. if necessary. The winner of the series will move on to the super regional and teams will be reseeded after the first round.

The state championships will be held at Bakersfield College the weekend of May 18-20.
