College of the Canyons Ice Hockey team fell short of their goal going into the National Championships, in New Jersey. With their loss to Davenport University they were out of the race, but it did not stop them from playing like National Champions. After the 8-2 loss to Davenport, they beat both Robert Morris and the University of Central Florida. The Cougars defeated Robert Morris with a high scoring game of 9-6. Ben Conroy, Cougars forward registered with a hat trick (3 goals) and one assist. While line mate Brian Voogt, registered with a hat trick and three assists. The third and final game of the National Tournament was against the University of Central Florida, and what a final game it was. The game had to go into extended time, at a score of 6-6. This game couldn’t have been more even; shots were tied at 35 as well. Ben Conroy registered another hat trick and one assist; he registered the game-winning goal in overtime. While Brian Voogt scored three times and got three assists. Conroy and Voogt, took control of the Cougars offense. Taylor Speasak got the start in net for the Cougars making 29 saves on 35 shots. With all this being said, the College of the Canyons Cougars men’s ice hockey team have proved again that they can hang with the big boys. Unfortunately, the team could not repeat as back-to-back National Champions.
