Amy Drogee belts a Grand Slam

The Cougar Softball team started their year off on the right note sweeping the Santiago Canyon Hawks in their season opening double-header.

The first game got off to a slow start with neither team scoring in the first two innings. In the top of the third inning, COC’s freshman pitcher Kimmie Lockhart struggled, walking in a run and giving up a two run double. In the bottom of the third, the cougars responded with a grand slam to left center field by sophomore captain, Amy Drogee that gave the Cougars their first lead of the season.

“I just went up there confident and relaxed and it just came to me.” said Drogee. “I couldn’t have done it unless the other girls had gotten on. I just went up there looking for a base hit and we got fortunate on that one.”

Drogee’s blast proved to be the spark that the team needed as the Cougars went on to win the top half of the double-header 10-5.

The second half of the double-header was considerably closer than the first with the cougars winning by the skin of their teeth to sweep the Hawks.

A home run by freshman the freshman catcher, Adriana Correa and a triple by freshman Kimmie Lockhart proved the difference in the game with the Cougars winning 4-3.

The Cougars will spend the next three games on the road traveling to take on Riverside, Santa Barbara and Cypress before returning home on the 16th to face off in a double-header against Moorpark at 1:00 pm.
