Rena Bailey Barrett is one of the local College of the Canyons dance teachers.

This charismatic dance instructor has been dancing for 40 years!

When Barrett was around six she saw Gelsey Kirkland in the New York City Ballet and knew she wanted to do that!

“I started taking lessons. I started with jazz, modern then tap and everything in-between,” Barrett said.

Barrett has her bachelors degree from Alliant University in San Diego.

Not only has Barrett been teaching for years but she has been performing for many years and has great advice!

Barrett tells Cougar News if you are a dancer and want to make dancing a career, learn as many types of routines as you can.

“What happens if you’re on So You Think You Can Dance?” Barrett laughs, “You could be thrown into a tango number and all the classes you’ve taken have been ballet and jazz! Not good!”

Barrett also said the more versatile you are the better chance you’ll have at getting dance jobs.

Barrett has also performed in many different shows.

Some of her highlights have been right here on the College of the Canyons stage! Barrett was in Cabaret, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Wizard of Oz and A Chorus Line.

Not only will Barrett continue teaching but will continue to perform.

Barrett is a mentor who has passion for her art and loves to share it with her students.
