Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies and Los Angeles County Fire personnel arrived at COC’s Valencia campus last night in response to a hoax emergency call from someone claiming that a white male in his 20s had been shot at Cougar Stadium, said COC in a released statement Thursday.

The California Highway Patrol received the call shortly before 8 p.m. and sheriff’s deputies determined that the call was a hoax after not finding any incident of a shooting at the school.

“Subsequent calls this morning to Santa Clarita Sheriffs and Henry Mayo Hospital by college staff confirmed no incident took place last night,” said COC Director of Public Information Bruce Battle in the statement.

Battle also said that the false news had spread over the Internet last night after “CBS local” posted the initial story last night.

“This was quickly picked up in social media channels, especially Twitter, and shared additional times without knowing that there was no actual emergency,” he said.

Sometime before 8pm on Wednesday night, the California Highway Patrol received a phone call reporting that a white male in his 20s had been shot on the College of the Canyons football stadium.
