College of the Canyons with help from the USTA hosted its first ever tennis block party on Sunday afternoon. The event drew dozens of tennis enthusiasts and novices of all ages.
COC used the event which was free to the public as a much needed recruiting boost to a sport that has struggled to remain popular among young athletes.
The afternoon also featured a beat the pro contest, a radar gun to record serving speed, and Wilson Tennis balls put on a free demo.
Also on hand were both the Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine mens and women’s tennis teams. Players from both squads helped work with participants of all ages. Later in the day both teams played against each other in an exhibition.
Local businesses including Corner Bakery, and the Paseo Club also helped sponsor the event. The Boys and Girls Club of Santa Clarita and the YMCA were also represented.
