A vigil was held for fallen soldier Rudy Acosta at the Santa Clarita Baptist Church last week. Citizens of Santa Clarita arrived in droves, packing the church to near capacity to honor the man they lost all too soon.
Among those in attendance were Congressman Buck McKeon, Santa Clarita City Councilman Bob Kellar, and friends, family and students of the Santa Clarita Christian School. Both Congressman McKeon and Councilman Kellar spoke in honor of Rudy, citing his bravery and excellence in Acosta’s field.
Two of Rudy’s teachers spoke at the vigil, one of them being the athletic director who spoke about his attempts to recruit Acosta and finally succeeding in Rudy’s senior year. Rudy’s favorite teacher, Lois Cronin, also spoke of Rudy’s impact in the classroom and on her life as a teacher. She recounted her initial reaction to the news of Rudy joining the Army, which she was hesitant to accept but also acknowledged feeling a great sense of pride.
Rudy’s father, Dante Acosta, spoke to the crowd, pleading for them to not only keep Rudy in their hearts but also all of the soldiers still fighting overseas. He also asked that no more flowers be sent to the Acosta household, asking instead that if anyone wished to contribute the the Rudy A. Acosta Memorial Foundation. Donations can be sent to either Santa Clarita Christian School or Santa Clarita Baptist Church at 27249 Luther Dr. Santa Clarita, CA 91351.
