It went down to the wire but the College of the Canyons Lady Cougars prevail in San Bernardino keeping its state championship hopes alive.
With just 4 seconds remaining in regulation, sophomore guard Dominique Turner, made a cut to the basket off of a high double screen who drained a left handed lay up that would be the deciding score as the Lady Cougars defeated the Wolverines Wednesday night 69-67.
With the win COC (24-7, 11-1) advances to the fourth round of the Southern California playoffs Saturday night, March 5 at 7 pm at Mt. San Antonio College. Mt. Sac beat Pasadena Wednesday night 61-45.
While Mt. Sac is the number three ranked team in the tournament, COC has already taken down the Mounties earlier in the season in the Ventura College Kiwanis Tournament on November 27, with a score of 75-67.
Against San Bernardino, the Cougars were led by sophomore point guard Kelli Lewis with 17 points and freshman forward Tinky Dahte with 16 points. Turner finished the evening with 15 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists.
Paige Haynes scored a game high of 21 points and Darshae Burnside had 11 points, six rebounds and six blocked shots.
COC was 8-13 from the 3-point line, while they held San Bernardino to just 8-20 from the arch.
The Lady Cougars had a 12 point lead with just three minutes left in the game and allowed the Wolves to come roaring back with a couple of three pointers late to tie it up at 67 with just 26 seconds left in the game. Until Turner hit the game winning lay up with 4 seconds remaining.
