College of the Canyons Swim took a beating in their meet against Bakersfield Community College Friday.
COC lost the overall team competition losing 242 to 188, but COC finished in second in all but a few events.
The few that were clinched by COC were the men’s 100-yard fly, with Jimmy Karren at a time of 57.39 seconds over Ryan Farrer of Bakersfield. Karren also finished in second place in the men’s 200-yard free, with a time of 1:54.24.
“We did pretty well. [I think we] took some close races and swam hard giving Bakersfield a good run,” Karren said.
COC’s Keith Wells also finished in first in the men’s 50-yard free, beating Nick Marquez by three-tenths of a second, with a total race time of 23.29 seconds.
Esther Vogler won the women’s 50-yard fly, with a time of 30.77 seconds –- two seconds ahead of her competition from Bakersfield.
Coach Jeff Conwell, while disheartened at the team loss, was fairly optimistic as the final race of the day ended.
“[We] swam as well as we could,” Conwell said. “[I want to] try and improve speed and endurance. We just need to try and finish our races better.”
Next week, COC hosts and competes in the Western State Conference quad meet along with Santa Monica, Ventura, and Los Angeles Valley College.
