Valencia – College of the Canyons released its football scheduled for the 2011 season on Monday. After finishing their first season in the Western State Conference Southern Division with a 6-5 overall record and a 3-2 conference record, the Cougars will see the same schedule in 2011 as they did a year ago.
COC will open up at home against Antelope Valley at 7 p.m. after crushing the Marauders 35-7 in the season opener in Lancaster in 2010. The Cougars will then face their biggest challenge in the second week of the season as they will host the defending state champion in Mt. San Antonio College at 7 p.m. at Cougar Stadium. The Mounties defeated COC a year ago 34-19, after the Cougars held in their for most of the game until the wheels fell off the bus in the fourth quarter with costly turnovers and red zone miscues.
The next two games on the season could be upset alerts before heading into a difficult conference schedule. The Cougars will travel to Citrus for their first road game of 2011 at 1 p.m. After a 24 point first quarter and a 31-3 lead at the half in 2010, COC almost let the Owls upset them a year ago by outscoring them 21-7 in the second half but COC was able to prevail 38-24. Week four will be back at Cougar Stadium against East L.A. at 7 p.m. COC cruised to a 33-6 win in 2010.
Week five will bring the second toughest match of the season and it figures it would be the week before conference play and it would be two hours away in El Cajon against Grossmont at 1 p.m. The Griffins dominated the Cougars a year ago with a 36-18 clobbering. Grossmont out scored COC in the second quarter 16-3 and they out gained COC in yardage with 434 to the Cougars 249.
Week six will mark the start of Western Conference play when COC will start at El Camino for a 6 p.m. kickoff. COC came up with a big 26-9 win over the Warriors to open up conference in 2010. Week seven should be another thrilling match up between two equally matched teams as tradition has proven. Last year it took a jump ball from quarterback Justin Arias to receiver Rickeem Jackson in overtime to beat the Bulldogs 30-27.
The Cougars will be looking for revenge in week eight when they travel to Cerritos at 7 p.m. It wasn’t pretty a year ago at Cougar Stadium as COC blew a 16-5 half time lead by giving up 19 points in the third quarter. A game that ultimately clinched the Western State Conference, Southern Division championship in 2010.
Next up will be a 6 p.m. road game in Ventura where the Pirates will look to steal their treasure back after being robbed 37-24 in 2010. One of the more intense and exciting games COC played in 2010 to finish out their home schedule. Tradition will stand true in the final game of the year as rival Bakersfield comes to town. The Cougars should be hungry for this final match up after being pummeled by the Renegades 41-14 in Bakersfield in 2010, a game that COC was never in.
