The College of the Canyon hockey club is primed and ready for a shot at the Division III National Championship after defeating California University of Pennsylvania earlier this morning 2-1 in overtime.
The Cougars game winning goal came four minutes into the first overtime period that sent COC to the championship game tonight where they will face off against Hope College, a private, four year Liberal Arts college in Holland, Michigan, at 8:30 p.m. EST. Hope defeated Central Florida 5-2 in their semi-final match up.
COC struggled to get on the board the whole game as they were out shot 18-7 in the first period. Luckily for the Cougars the Vulcans also struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunites as Michael McGrath was a rock for COC in the net as he has been all tournament long.
The Vulcans struck first with a late goal in the sixteenth minute to put the pressure on COC late in the game. The Cougars would answer the Vulcans challenge with a goal of their own in the eighteenth to tie the game at one and send it to overtime.
