For Victoria Leonard, teaching is not just a profession, it’s a passion. Going above and beyond the call of duty, Leonard is constantly working with students and faculty to create a unique and successful educational experience. A member of the COC team since 1989, Leonard has been key in the development of the school’s award-winning communication department.
It’s hard to think of this energetic teacher as being shy but like most students, Leonard did not look forward to the required college speech class. After taking the “dreaded” public speaking course at CSUN, Leonard quickly learned that much of what was being taught in her speech communications class applied to real-life situations. Leonard quickly switched her majors, “went full speed ahead,” and the rest is history.
In 1995, Leonard became a full-time employee at the Valencia campus and began chairing the communications department. Since that time, the department has continued to grow and develop each semester. An overachiever and workaholic, Leonard has also been a coordinator of the successful Associates Program since 2009, a program she herself completed back in 1991.
Looking forward to the future of the department, it is Leonard’s hope that additional sections will be added in upcoming years as well as additional faculty members. She is extremely proud of what her fellow professors have accomplished throughout her years at COC.
