The Health and Wellness Center at College of the Canyons has a mission: “To help keep students physically and mentally healthy so that they can succeed in school and life.”
Every student at COC is required to pay the student health fee, but not all students know exactly what they are paying for. As student Nick Brooks put it, “I never knew [the health center] was there.” He added, “I get a email from the bookstore everyday, maybe they should send a email out letting students know they’re there.”
All registered students at COC have access to a wide range of health services including: a variety of contraceptives, confidential HIV testing, mental health counseling, prescription medication, and nutrition counseling. Office visits and counseling are free.
Health insurance is a problem in this country but there are still options available. Health scholarships are available to help save money on lab tests, medicine, vaccines and birth control through your student health center. The staff will also help eligible students sign up for state and federal health insurance.
Unhealthy eating habits are an ongoing problem for some college students, and Sports & Wellness Dietitian Sheri Barke,RD is there to help. Sheri provides free one on one appointments to help students on a budget learn how to eat well and take care of their bodies. She also is there to inform athletes on how to eat for maximum performance.
If you’re a smoker at COC, then you know how hard it is to deal with the college being a smoke-free campus. Smoking Cessation counselor Audrey Burgdorfer,RN is there to support you in the process. Thanks to a grant from ASG, the Health Center now has more aids to help quit smoking, including nicotine patches.
The cold and flu season is upon us and COC has you covered. On Friday, October 29th from 10am to 2pm, free flu vaccines are available to students, as well as the community. Vaccines will be given in the East PE Gym until they run out. No appointment is needed.
