STEVENSON RANCH – A single car accident ignited a brush fire on Pico Canyon Rd, just west of Southern Oaks Drive. The fire, referred to as the Oak Incident Fire, erupted at approximately 2:00 PM and burned 10 Acres. Firefighters on the ground and four helicopters in the air battled the blaze for over two hours before it was considered under control, with all but one helicopter being relieved of duty. The final helicopter sat at nearby Jake Kuredjian Park until 6:00 PM in case the winds picked up and reignited the fire. Firefighters operating the helicopter said the other helicopters were relieved around 4:15 PM.

The fire started when the driver of a 2010 Honda Accord traveling westbound on Pico Canyon Rd lost control of the vehicle. The car struck the center divider, came back across the road, knocked down a tree and came to rest in the dry brush to the north of the sidewalk. CHP Officer Kelley said the fire was likely caused by the heat from the engine or exhaust of the vehicle coming in contact with the dry brush, although the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The driver of the vehicle, an unidentified female, was taken by ambulance to Henry Mayo Hospital complaining of head pain, but the move was precautionary and her condition is not considered serious.
