After losing four games in the last week, the College of the Canyons Cougars baseball team finally found their bats and recaptured a share of the Western State Conference lead with a victory over the Pierce Brahmas Bulls, 9-6 on Thursday at COC.
The Cougars got a strong performance out of starting pitcher Brian Kernochan, who allowed just two runs through seven innings of work. COC’s offense had contributions from top to bottom, and Pierce couldn’t finish off a late comeback attempt. Robert Vickers and Hugo Hernandez both had clutch hits, and Nico Moreno’s sacrifice gave the Cougars the lead for good in the fifth. Pierece added two runs each in the eighth and ninth, but by then, COC was warming up the busses and had their eyes set on another Western State Conference championship.
The win avenged an embarrassing loss to Pierce on Tuesday, when the Cougars lost 13-4. The Cougars will host Citrus tomorrow at 1pm.
