COC baseball ended their regular season at home today with a thrilling walk-off single to beat Citrus College 15-14.

Unfortunately for the Cougars, it was the last game of a disappointing season in which they finished 18-16 overall, 12-9 in conference. The game itself was very characteristic of how their season went.

COC started the game on fire. Cal Vogelsang drove in two runs in the bottom of the first to get things started, but it was infielder Sean Sweeney’s home run in the bottom of the second that led the way to a six-run inning to give COC an early 8-0 lead.

However, just like in many games this season, it didn’t take long before the other team started coming back on the Cougars.

COC pitcher Brian Kernochan started the first two innings hot with a couple of strikeouts, but allowed four runs in the next three innings to give the Owls a chance. He was pulled after five.

Citrus scored two runs in the third and fifth innings to attempt a comeback, but it wasn’t until the Cougars committed three errors in the top of the sixth that the comeback was complete. Citrus ended the sixth with nine more runs putting them up 11-8.

After a scoreless seventh inning, the Owls continued the onslaught with three more runs in the top of the eighth to take a 14-8 lead.

Even after allowing 14 unanswered runs, the Owls didn’t know that the Cougars had one last trick up their sleeves before they said goodbye to the season.

COC scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a two run home run by outfielder Ken Shanahan to cut the lead to one with a score of 14-13. The Owls also made two errors in the inning.

In the top of the ninth, COC survived a hit and an error to give themselves a chance, which they took advantage of.

After two quick strikeouts, Citrus was faced with the bases loaded thanks to a couple of walks and a single by outfielder Jeremy Weber. Thats when outfielder Kenny Shanahan knocked one into right centerfield sending Tyler Pugmire and Robert Vickers home to score the final victorious runs of the season.

Notes: COC Baseball ended the season 18-16 overall, 12-9 conference. COC pitcher Troy Neiman was awarded the win (1-0). COC ended the game with 15 hits, seven errors. Citrus had 15 hits, three errors.
