The offense was relentless, the pitching was flawless, and the College of the Canyons Lady Cougar softball team was never challenged in their sweep of a double-header over Santa Monica College on Tuesday at COC.
The Cougars (20-9, 9-2) followed up an earlier 26-0 win with two more dominant shutouts, winning game one 14-0 and game two 16-0.
COC wasted little time in establishing their dominance over SMC, as shortstop Alexis Caso hit a lead-off homerun to put the Cougars on top in the first inning. Up by four in the second inning, Melissa Herndon smacked her first homerun of the game, a two-run shot to give COC a 6-0 lead.
In the fourth, things really fell apart for SMC. The Cougars added 6 more runs, including a 2-run homer from Ruby Herrera, and the game was called at 14-0 after four and a half innings.
Ashley Imperial pitched three near perfect innings, allowing just one hit and no walks to get the win.
In game two, the Cougars were slow out of the gates, but back-to-back home runs from Herrera and Whitney Bruce made the score 4-0. The inning would get worse, as Herndon would step up and drill a grand slam and the score was quickly 10-0.
Herndon would add a two-run double in the fourth, followed by a Bruce two-run triple, and the Cougars earned the sweep with the 16-0 victory in 4 and a half innings.
Sarah Biggs pitched all five innings, allowing just two baserunners in the shutout.
Herndon lead the Cougars with a combined 9 RBI’s, while Bruce hit her first ever over-the-wall homerun, and added 6 more RBI’s.
The Cougars remain just one game behind Citrus in the Western State Conference Blue Division standings. COC will host Citrus on Thursday at 2:30, looking to avenge their only two Conference loses of the year.
