“Todays celebration is to honer everybody who has served this country, whether it’s World War 2, Korea or Vietnam… whether it was a conflict or a war, their service is what counts and it shouldn’t be forgotten.”

Following a President Harry S. Truman led effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country, on August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days.

After the ceremony, at sundown a candle light vigil was hosted by Prayer Angels for the Military at Veterans Historical Plaza.
